Acupuncture is offered at both our offices in downtown Salt Lake and in South Jordan. Acupuncture may be included as part of a treatment plan for chiropractic care or can be experienced as a stand alone service. Our approach often integrates acupuncture with bodywork, cupping, and topical herbal medicines for a comprehensive treatment.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medicine practice, involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate both the central and peripheral nervous systems. Research has shown that acupuncture is safe, effective, and pain free.

How does it work?

Acupuncture points correspond to meridians through which vital energy (qi) flows, aiming to balance qi and promote overall health. When the needles are inserted, each one creates a ‘micro-injury,’ sending a message to the brain to heal that area. These micro-injuries promote increased circulation, allowing more oxygen and white blood cells to reach the targeted areas. This improved circulation prompts the release of endorphins (natural painkillers) and helps clear out cortisol (the stress hormone) and lactic acid, which often cause inflammation and pain, thus creating more space in the tissues for proper blood flow. Some points help to stimulate the trigger points of tight muscles, getting them to release and relax, helping to reduce muscle aches.

What to Expect During an Acupuncture Treatment

● Acupuncture is generally considered a low-pain or painless procedure.
● Your acupuncture session begins with an intake where your acupuncturist discusses your primary concerns and health history.
● You will then lie down on a massage table, and the acupuncturist will start with gentle bodywork to assess muscle groups and promote relaxation.
● Next, 10-20 needles will be carefully inserted at specific points on your body. These points include areas near local pain, as well as along your arms, legs, and other regions where you may be experiencing discomfort, such as the muscles, back, scalp, and ears.
● You may feel a slight sensation when the needles are inserted, but afterward, they typically feel like a dull pressure. Sensations can vary, from a heavy or “buzzy” feeling to warmth or nothing at all—everyone’s experience is unique.
● You will rest with the needles in place for about 20-30 minutes, during which many people relax deeply or even fall asleep.
● Afterward, your acupuncturist will remove the needles and allow you time to wake up gently. Many report feeling relaxed, refreshed, and sometimes sleepy after treatment.
● It’s advisable to take it easy for the rest of the day to support your body’s ongoing healing process.
● Please wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to areas like your arms and lower legs, and possibly your back.
